Sam Sisakhti was recently recognized by Stuff Magazine for his amazing breakthrough in the world of fashion and business. Abandoning a promising future at a financing job in favor of entering the field of fashion, he has since launched the site UsTrendy in 2008. This online marketplace is where independent designers can break into the fashion industry by displaying their items, drawing in customers, and accruing funds. With this great risk came great reward: his site now boasts 14,000 designers from over 100 countries around the world, and he bared all in Stuff to let us know how he did it.
Sam stated that "UsTrendy is based on the belief that the term 'indie' refers to anyone who does not have that huge name brand you can find in the mall and it is usually the indie designers that provide the best quality for the price." Therefore, the site benefits the buyers for allowing them to find unique trends and fair prices as well as the sellers by helping them gain exposure. Now, as we can see, having so many sellers use his site is doing him the same favor: bringing him the spotlight. Along with capturing the attention of Stuff, he has been listed as one of the Social Shakers under 30 in Boston Magazine, made an appearance on BizJournals.com, and has even been featured on Inc.com.
"My goal is to build up as many independent designers as I can," says Sisakhti, who aims to give designers the opportunity to make their debut in an otherwise cutthroat industry. He certainly has a passion for fashion and wants to take advantage of the ever-growing Internet medium, but finds, most importantly, that following his dream was much more auspicious than settling into a career that didn't satisfy him. Though it was a secure and promising job that he left, he said in the interview, "I could see myself settling. I knew I had to get out after just a week."
UsTrendy flaunts hundreds of thousands of unique items and a system that allows shoppers partake in a fashion democracy, deciding what is "in" and "out" for themselves. It's the perfect place to buy and sell for fashion lovers and designers alike.
