New hire vans in Dublin. The Mercedes Sprinter makes a great rental van.

The commercial van rental and truck hire sector in Ireland has been hard hit over the last 24 months. Many operators have gone to the wall and others have found themselves unable to access funds to moderrnise their fleets. Online van hire operator Vanrentals.ie has just done that and is proud to have taken delivery of its first batch of Mercedes Sprinter hire vans for 2010.

Normally such news would not merit much attention in the industry. However as Mick Shanahan, Fleet Manager for Vanrentals.ie points out "we are probably the first van hire company to break rank this year and restock, to be honest we had to do it".

As the economy falls back, so have many hire companies quality of vehicles. Housemovers and companies are now typically provided Ford Transit hire vans up to five years old by most of the Multiple chains of hire company. Vanrentals.ie have decided to position themselves as a premium supplier of hire vans and rental trucks.

To facilitate this move upmarket, new vehicles were required. In Ireland the Ford Transit Van is the staple of the van hire business. However, with such a common product it is difficult to differentiate yourself from your competitors. Mercedes Commercial vehicles offered the solution to this problem. The Sprinter van while sharing the same dimensions as the Ford Transit is a better specified vehicle. There is a six speed tranmission as standard and also a more powerful 2.2 litre 120bhp diesel engine. The load access and build quality far surpasses that of the Transit.

As John Murphy, Operations manager of vanrentals.ie points out " we needed units that were comfortable on longer journey, especially because we put so many units into Europe each month". Another benefit of these new Sprinter units has been their fuel economy. John reckons his units are providing up to 20% lower fuel consuption that the Ford Transit units which they are replacing.

Vanrentals.ie have initally purchased 25 of these units for delivery by the end of march with a further delivery expected by the end of June. This could be the start of a useful strategic partnership between Vanrentals.ie and Mercedes Commercials in Ireland.
