Recruiting for Recruiters Slows, but Still Surpasses Pre-Recession Levels

Recruiting professionals see 12% growth in hiring demand during September 2012, with more than 14,000 job postings available online, according to WANTED Analytics™.

In September 2012, more than 14,000 jobs were advertised online for Recruiters and staffing professionals in the United States, according to WANTED Analytics™ (http://www.wantedanalytics.com), the leading source of real-time business intelligence for the talent marketplace. The number of job ads for recruiting and staffing specialists has been strong in 2012, outpacing pre-recession hiring levels. In September, the volume of available listings was up 12% compared to September 2011 and 29% versus the same time period in 2010.

The job requirements for Recruiters continue to evolve as they use new technologies in their daily functions and find candidates through new mediums. In addition to traditional skills, such as experience with applicant tracking software (ATS) and full lifecycle recruiting, there are several emerging skill sets that are specified in job ads for this occupation. Two of these include negotiation and social media skills, both of which have increased in demand over the past year. The number of job ads that look for candidates with strong negotiation abilities is up 13% compared to September 2011, whereas job ads with social media requirements have grown 52% since last year.

Recruiters are in-demand across the United States, with the highest volume of listings during September seen in New York (NY), Washington (DC), Chicago (IL), Los Angeles (CA), and San Francisco (CA). The New York metro area saw the most available positions; however, San Francisco experienced the greatest growth in demand over the past year of these five areas. Here, the number of job ads that were available during September was up 36% compared to the same time period last year.

As more employers increase hiring demand for Recruiters, they are likely to experience more competition and an increased difficulty to fill. According to the Hiring Scale™, employers across the United States spend an average of 5 weeks advertising jobs and sourcing candidates for Recruiting positions. However, each location and region of the US will experience a varying degree of difficulty and time-to-hire. Companies in San Francisco, California and Minneapolis, Minnesota are currently experiencing more challenging overall recruiting conditions. Fierce competition has emerged as hiring in these areas is growing more quickly than the local talent supply can support. Job ads in this area remain online for an average of 6 weeks.

In comparison, the Hiring Scale also shows the locations that are likely to find these jobs less difficult to fill are Jackson, Mississippi and Scranton, Pennsylvania. Larger talent supply compared to the hiring demand by employers in these metro areas means that Recruiters positions are likely to be filled easier and faster. The average duration of a job ad in these locations is 3.7 weeks, more than one week shorter than national averages.
