WellCare Health Plans, Inc. (NYSE: WCG) congratulates HOTEL INC’s Homeless Outreach Program for winning the Faith-Based Organization Volunteer Award, a Kentucky Governor’s Award for Volunteerism and Service. The award was presented today by Lt. Gov. Jerry Abramson at a ceremony at the Governor’s Mansion in Frankfort, Ky. celebrating volunteer efforts conducted in 2012. WellCare of Kentucky nominated HOTEL INC for the award.
Administered by the Kentucky Commission on Community Volunteerism, the annual Governor’s Awards for Volunteerism and Service recognize individuals and groups throughout the commonwealth who have served their fellow Kentuckians in an extraordinary manner.
The Homeless Outreach Program was launched in September 2012 in Bowling Green, Ky., after HOTEL INC and other social service providers recognized that the growing number of unsheltered homeless needed assistance in connecting with local non-profit social and community services. HOTEL INC gathered volunteers from these organizations, as well as WellCare of Kentucky, Western Kentucky University and local churches to launch a weekly homeless outreach. The program provides for immediate food and medical needs, and works with individuals to connect them with housing, medical care and employment opportunities.
Since the Homeless Outreach Program began, nearly 100 people have been assisted and it has helped 16 people to secure permanent housing. More than 50 volunteers participate monthly in the program.
“For HOTEL INC to be nominated for and awarded the Faith-Based Organization Volunteer Award for 2012 is so encouraging to those who serve and are served,” said Rhondell Miller, HOTEL INC Director. “Our guests were thrilled to hear that those who serve them each week are being honored by the governor. As a smaller non-profit in Bowling Green, it is an honor for one of our programs to be recognized in this manner.”
“WellCare salutes our community partner, HOTEL INC, and the important work it is doing to assist those who need it most,” said Mike Minor, WellCare of Kentucky President. “WellCare is working with organizations, like HOTEL INC, throughout the commonwealth to identify critical gaps within the social safety net and then collaborating to meet those needs.”
WellCare, through its Advocacy & Community-Based Programs, has a strategic focus on homelessness in Kentucky, and over the last year has been engaged in more than 1,400 activities aimed at addressing this issue. WellCare partners with HOTEL INC on a variety of programs and projects that seek to address homelessness and poverty in the Bowling Green, Ky., area.
