West Virginia provides an enticing collection of relaxing overnight and multi-day trips, arts and heritage sites and adventure destinations that are affordable and close-to-home."

Affordable travel ideas

With today's economic uncertainty, the thought of staying closer to home is becoming more attractive to many. Whether you are looking for a day trip or a mini vacation, West Virginia is full of unique adventures that are suitable for the entire family. Get a history lesson at the state's new museum in Charleston, or see West Virginia's historical battle flags at Independence Hall in Wheeling. Take a tour of a state park - all but one offer free admission so visitors can take part in outdoor exploration or summer programs. Celebrate the music, food and arts that make West Virginia almost heaven at a local fair or festival. Many of these events offer free admission and plenty of activities. Outdoor activities and events from mild to wild

West Virginia, with its abundance of recreational opportunities ranging from mild to wild, secures its reputation as an outdoor lover's paradise. Take a leisurely stroll through the woods to observe the native wildlife and flowers at places like Cranberry Wilderness and Kanawha State Forest, or test your fortitude in one of the many outdoor competitions and events like 24 Hours of Big Bear, the annual Scenic Mountain Triathlon and the Black Bear 40K Mountain Bike Race. Take in nature's bountiful harvest

Summer's here; the living is easy and the food is fresh, tasty and amply abundant. If you enjoy traditional Appalachian fare, we've got it; if you like to spice up your life with chili and finger-licking barbecue, we've got that too. If fresh-from-the-garden produce makes your mouth water, you'll find farms throughout the state that let you pick your own. And don't forget the wine - there's no better way to top off a meal than with a vintage made right here in West Virginia. You'll find so many good food choices in the Mountain State this summer, the only thing you'll need to worry about is keeping your waistline from expanding. For information about events, visit www.wvtourism.com. For more information about pick-your-own farms, visit www.wvagriculture.org.

Celebrate the art of fun in West Virginia this summer

Get creative with the art of celebration in West Virginia. The Mountain State is in tune with musical tastes from soaring symphonies, including the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra and Wheeling Symphony, to jumping jazz at Lewisburg's Carnegie Hall to foot-stompin' music at Charleston's FestivALL. The stages are set to entertain, from historical outdoor dramas at Cliffside Amphitheatre at Grandview to modern theater works at Contemporary American Theater. Folk arts and regional culture are alive and kicking up their heels in festivals and workshops where visitors can start their own traditions with hands-on instruction in heritage crafts. For more information, visit www.wvtourism.com.

West Virginia attractions make heritage a living experience

History comes alive at West Virginia attractions this summer. Commemorate the 150th anniversary of John Brown's raid at Harpers Ferry this year, ride a mantrip in an underground coal mine at the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine or observe life in the 19th century at the Heritage Farm Museum and Village in Huntington.
