Wintergreen Resort has tapped 25-year veteran of the resort and recreation industry Hank Thiess as general manager of the luxury destination located high atop Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains.

Thiess joins Wintergreen Resort, one of the most popular winter playgrounds in the Mid-Atlantic, after most recently serving as president/general manager of Durango Mountain Resort in Durango, Colo. His resort career has been focused in operations with a particular focus on elevated service levels, while addressing financial goals.

Prior to his three-year tenure in Durango, Thiess was the general manager/COO of Wisp Resort in McHenry, Md. He also was with Keystone Resort in Keystone, Colo., in several capacities from 1986 to 2002. He worked his way up from director of Keystone's ski school to vice president of resort operations.

"In my new position at Wintergreen, I look forward to working closely with the resort's members and guests to help guide the property into its very bright future," Thiess said.

Thiess actively participates with community organizations, evidenced by his involvement in board member positions with the Durango Area Tourism Office, Durango Adaptive Sports Association and Durango Winter Sports Foundation. He said he looks forward to playing an active role in the Wintergreen community as well.

Thiess, a native of the Philadelphia area, earned his bachelor's degree from Kutztown University in Kutztown, Pa., and his master's degree from University of Denver.

Thiess, 58, and his wife, Mary Ann, and their two daughters, Mikaela, 11, and Madalyn, 8, have recently relocated to the Charlottesville area.

Wintergreen Resort is gearing up for the start of the 2008-09 winter recreational season with guests having the opportunity to take advantage of its 25 slopes, the most extensive beginner-to-expert terrain, and the state's largest tubing park.
