The ABDO Group announced today that their line of interactive picture books, nonfiction, and graphic novels called “ABDO iBooks” has been accredited by SmartTech,™ the leading manufacturer of digital whiteboards, for use with their technology.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled with this honor for our line of interactive books,” noted Paul Abdo, Editor-in-
Chief of the Edina, MN, based educational publisher. " Smart boards are one of the most exciting trends for reaching today’s students. But they’re also a new technology that educators are looking for creative ways to implement. By using our interactive books on their whiteboard, teachers will help 21st century learners who want multi-media, audio and video, and other opportunities for learning that digital whiteboards and our interactive books provide. But ABDO iBooks also have simple, usable features that make them easy to start using right away for social studies, history, reading, and other subject areas,” he added. “’Just pop one in and let the reading begin,’ is one of the ways we describe our interactive line. And that ease of use is also going to help teachers in using interactive books on whiteboards, too.”

An ABDO iBook is an interactive Flash file that plays a picture book, graphic novel, or nonfiction book designed for supplemental reading practice at a computer, or for use on a digital whiteboard. Readers or teachers can click the “Read to Me” autoplay feature at the start, and the iBook will play, with the text highlighted while an entertaining audio track reads to the student. Readers can also select “Let Me Read on My Own” for a static e-book version of the book on the screen. Each iBook includes a number of action and sound effects, clickable primary sources and read-aloud glossary terms, and an easy-to-click comprehension quiz at the end. The social studies iBook series – Our Nation’s Pride – was created by an Emmy Award-winning news producer and includes 12 embedded video, audio, and primary source links throughout the book. The Science Rocks! picture book series is based on the print books that won the 2008 Golden Lamp Award for the Best Books in Educational Publishing. All ABDO interactive books are based on a companion print book, and with the Spring 2010 releases, the line now features 64 interactive titles available in ten different series.

“Highlighting the text while the audio reads the word aloud is one of the best ways to build reading skills,” Abdo stated. “We’ve made the interactive books entertaining, and informative, reading practice – to promote a number of related skills, including successful silent reading, better grasp of the subject matter for auditory learners, and better pronunciation of terms when the student reads the companion print book,” Abdo stated.

The publisher has created a range of white papers available at their Web site that document research on how iBooks are perfect for using with Title I students, ESL programs, Special Education, struggling readers, & more. “ABDO iBooks recreate the activity of reading aloud to a student while the word is highlighted – but instead of the word pointed out by a parent’s or teacher’s finger, the words light up on the screen,” Abdo said. “This audio-text connection is the top way to build reading skills, no matter what a student’s grade level, reading level, or cultural background may be.” More information and free downloadable samples are available at http://www.abdopublishing.com.

The family-owned ABDO Publishing Group is celebrating its 27th year in business, and publishes educational nonfiction, fiction, and interactive CDs under their ABDO Publishing Company, Spotlight, Magic Wagon, and ABDO iBooks divisions.
