Educational software company Imagine Learning is sponsoring a free webinar focused on research-based practices to help English learners build a stronger foundation to achieve academic success. The live presentation is part of Imagine Learning’s Ahead of the Class webinar series, which draws on expert educators to provide information on current topics in education. The webinar will air on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. MDT.

In this presentation, Dr. Sylvia Linan-Thompson, associate professor at the University of Texas at Austin, will examine the effects of explicit literacy instruction on students’ transition from Spanish to English instruction and the implementation of Response to Intervention (RTI) with English learners. According to Dr. Thompson, academic language is essential for academic success, yet many English learners are not exposed to this level of language.

Along with these implementations, participants will also be provided with the research base for language and literacy practices that can be implemented across content areas.

About the Presenter
Dr. Sylvia Linan-Thompson is an associate professor at the University of Texas at Austin. She is currently examining the effect of explicit literacy instruction on students’ transition from Spanish to English instruction and the implementation of Response to Intervention (RTI) with English learners. Over the last 13 years, she has developed and examined reading interventions for struggling readers, English monolingual students and English learners. She has authored articles, chapters and books on these topics and has developed instructional guides.
