Accent American’s Master Carpet Cleaner in Tampa, owner Ken Jordan, reveals five carpet care must-dos to save carpet, time and replacement costs helping families stretch budgets in these tough economic times.
Carpets and flooring are a major expense for home owners often purchased after hours of agonizing shopping. Proper care will keep them looking beautiful and under warranty for years of enjoyment. “Unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation circulating on the subject of carpet care, spot removal and cleaning that makes it difficult for the home owner to know the right things to do in each situation,” says Jordan, an IICRC (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification) Certified Master Carpet Cleaner and 27 year carpet care veteran.
From his years of training and experience, ranging from straight forward carpet cleaning jobs to full disaster restoration projects after Category 5 hurricanes, Jordan prepared a list of easy must dos for home owners to help them properly care for their carpets.
Must Do #1. Know your carpet type and manufactures care instructions. There are many types of carpet, wool, natural fiber, nylon, olefin, polyester. Each comes with its own manufacturer care and cleaning instructions. Following these instructions will keep your carpet looking good and under warranty.
Must Do #2. Vacuum your carpet – a lot! Vacuuming will remove the dirt and sand that break down carpet fibers and will extend carpet life.
Must Do #3. Be sure to clean your carpet before it looks dirty. Consult a certified Master Carper Cleaner who can set up a schedule for the carpet type in the home.
Must Do #4. Learn the correct spot cleaning technique for your carpet type. The best defense against spots and stains on carpeting is the proper application of fabric protector. Throw away chemical carpet cleaners. The companies who make them have large advertising budgets, but they are not effective because they have to be extracted with hot water. Most household spots (except pet stains - urine, feces, etc.) can be easily removed by using a solution of 2 parts white, non-sudsy ammonia mixed with 8 parts water. Must Do #5. Be sure any carpet cleaning company brought into your home is minimally an IICRC Master Carpet Cleaner with Gold Certification and will rinse your carpet. More information on the types of carpet cleaning and a fun video can be found at http://www.accentamerican.com/carpetcleaning.html.
“And beware, if a company is less than 5 years old. With the economic troubles in the last five years, some who have lost their jobs have opened carpet cleaning businesses with no training. Chances of getting clean carpets using an uncertified cleaner are slim and there is no recourse if the poor cleaning job is done in a way that voids the carpet warranty. If this has happened to you, we might be able to help,” says Jordan.
