A recent study finding California residents to have the third-highest rate of medical debt in the United States is cause for concern, according to Irvine accident lawyer Daniel C. Carlton.

After you’ve been injured in any type of accident, you may be shocked to learn just how quickly medical expenses can add up. Ambulance care comes at a cost. Hospital stays are not cheap. Surgeries can easily cost thousands of dollars.

Commenting on an ABC 23 news article that revealed California residents to face the third-highest rate of medical debt in the nation, Irvine accident lawyer Daniel C. Carlton said today it’s important for those injured in California to understand the true cost of their accident and take all necessary steps to receive the necessary compensation for their losses.

Carlton, an attorney in Irvine, CA with more than 35 years of experience, based his remarks on an October 13 article published by ABC 23. The report, “Study says California has third highest rate of medical debt in nation,” cites a study finding that injury victims face some of the highest medical bills in the nation after an accident.

“After you’ve been injured in any type of accident, you may be shocked to learn just how quickly medical expenses can add up,” Carlton said. “Ambulance care comes at a cost. Hospital stays are not cheap. Surgeries can easily cost thousands of dollars. Even if you have insurance or the person who caused your accident has insurance, you may find these companies may be unwilling to foot the bill for your recovery or may even deny wrongdoing altogether.”

According to ABC 23, information collected between 2010 and 2013 revealed California residents over age 18 faced the third highest medical debt in the nation. Furthermore, the study predicts that 20 percent of adults across the United States will have their debt handed over to collection agencies in 2014 alone.

ABC 23 reports that California’s medical debt might be caused in part due to billing errors made by hospitals and other medical centers across the state. According to the study, among 490 claims at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, a staggering 83.5 percent of claims contained billing errors and overcharged Medicare by 40.2 percent.

“Accident victims simply cannot afford to underestimate the true cost of their accident, including long-term costs such as physical therapy, medication and cost of future care,” Carlton said. “You don’t always need a lawyer after an accident. But we strongly urge all victims injured in accidents to consult with an experienced attorney. You may find that your bill contains an error, or may find you have the right to pursue additional compensation from a negligent party. These cases can become complicated quickly, which it’s important to seek the advice of legal counsel.”
