Absolutely perfect honeymoon. The 'Rimu' trip allowed us to experience all our favorite outdoor activities (hiking, biking, photography, camping, kayaking) without all the hard and time-consuming work.

Leading New Zealand-based adventure tour operator, Active Adventures, have recently noted a marked increase in ‘Celebration Travel’ including adventure honeymoons and birthday celebrations on their all-inclusive, small group adventures and see this trend continuing into 2013. By providing a high level of personalised service on their adventure vacations, clients can take the hassle out of planning an unforgettable celebration in bucket list destinations such as New Zealand, Nepal, Peru, Patagonia, Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands.

“What better way to celebrate a milestone than by doing what you love, somewhere you’ve always dreamed of visiting, with everything being taken care of for you,” says Paul McDonald, who handles custom and group travel at Active Adventures. The seasoned staff and guides, he says, are renowned for their exceptional “Kiwi hospitality” and enjoy the challenge of arranging celebrations that are both festive and personal, including producing homemade birthday cakes in the most remote locations. There is no extra charge for this service on their scheduled small group departures, and a private departure can be arranged for clients who would like to bring their own group of friends to help them celebrate in style.

Jeremy Vickey (of Alameda, CA) described his Active Adventures New Zealand tour with his wife in December as a “fantastic anniversary trip. The South Island of New Zealand was truly epic, and our guides were friendly, encouraging and made the most amazing food. What a fantastic way to celebrate our anniversary.”

For adventure-seeking couples, booking an all-inclusive New Zealand honeymoon can be the perfect antidote for the intensity of wedding planning. “Absolutely perfect honeymoon. The Rimu trip allowed us to experience all our favorite outdoor activities (hiking, biking, photography, camping, kayaking) without all the hard and time-consuming work (driving, grocery shopping, cooking, dealing with problems along the way, such as car trouble, hotel reservations, etc.). We met some really interesting people, and we still had plenty of alone time to ourselves,” wrote Alison Taroli and Eric Gelsleichter of their Active Adventures New Zealand tour in December.

Others in the travel industry are also noticing the popularity of clients choosing to celebrate special occasions away from home. “The Luxury Edition” of Travel Professional magazine reported in their November issue that tour operator Abercrombie & Kent saw the number of reservations for ‘celebration’ trips, including honeymoons, grow from 12% in 2010 to 18% in 2012.
