America’s Health Insurance Plans today announced the launch of a new online Spotlight on Community Leadership. This showcase features outstanding, best practice initiatives that are making significant improvements in the health and well-being of communities across the country. Each of the innovative programs featured on the Spotlight was founded by a health plan that identified a specific community need, established creative paths to address the problem, and successfully directed partnerships toward a collaborative solution.

“Insurance plans nationwide have a proven track record of implementing pathbreaking programs that make a real impact on the health of their communities, and can serve as models for others,” says Karen Ignagni, CEO of America’s Health Insurance Plans. These highly successful programs address needs that often fall outside the reach of the traditional health care system, and are varied in scope. Initiatives include preventive and primary care for the homeless, school grants for equipment to encourage physical activity programs among students, and nutrition and physical activity classes for seniors.

The Spotlight on Community Leadership enables plans to profile pioneering approaches that are working at the local level in order to provide roadmaps for others looking to address similar problems. This new effort continues a longstanding tradition within the health plan community of sharing information on successful programs, allowing for replication, and extending their reach nationwide.
