Vicky becomes Chair at a critical time as our industry works to implement the new health care reform law in a manner that will minimize disruption for the 200 million Americans our members serve and help bring new people into the system
Washington, DC (Vocus) July 9, 2010
America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) today announced that Vicky Gregg, FAHM, President and CEO of BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee (BCBST), has been elected by her colleagues as the new Chair of the Board of Directors. She will serve as the Board Chair for the twelve-month period that began on July 1, 2010.
“Vicky becomes Chair at a critical time as our industry works to implement the new health care reform law in a manner that will minimize disruption for the 200 million Americans our members serve and help bring new people into the system,” said AHIP President and CEO Karen Ignagni. “Her leadership skills and wealth of experience will be a great asset as our Board continues its work on the accessibility, affordability, and quality of health care.”
Prior to becoming CEO, Gregg occupied several senior leadership positions in BCBST, including President and Chief Operating Officer, Executive Vice President, and Chief Executive Officer of Volunteer State Health Plan, the company's Medicaid HMO. Before joining BCBST, she worked for 10 years for Humana Health Plans, where, as Vice President, she oversaw operations, strategic development, acquisition, and health plan service area expansion.
A nurse by education, Gregg has over 35 years of experience in diverse health care environments including clinical care, hospital administration, long-term care, and healthcare benefits and financing. In 2004, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) appointed her to the United States National Institutes of Health Commission on Systemic Interoperability, which was tasked with developing a strategy for building a nationwide electronic health records network.
"Vicky's experience in health care, ranging from providing direct patient care to serving as the chief executive, make her a perfect choice to lead this association as it adapts to the changes the industry is facing," said Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen. "She has a strong business background, and she's committed to improving the way health care is accessed, delivered and funded. I'm pleased to see a Tennessean of her caliber assume this national leadership role and helping shape the future of our country's health care system."
“Having had the privilege of working with Vicky in the past, I’ve always been impressed by her firm grasp of the complex health care issues facing America today,” said former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist. “As a strategic thinker, she sees the big picture and has a strong sense of how it all works together. As a proven industry leader, she brings a fresh and innovative perspective to the table. I’m confident that Vicky will be a great asset to AHIP, and by extension, America’s health care system.”
AHIP is the national association representing the health insurance industry. Its members provide health insurance coverage to more than 200 million Americans. In addition to health insurance, AHIP member companies provide long-term care insurance, disability income insurance, dental insurance, supplemental insurance, stop-loss and reinsurance.
AHIP’s Board of Directors is comprised of CEOs of leading health insurance plans from across the nation. AHIP’s Board has been an active participant in the national policy debate on health care reform since the release of its health care reform proposal in November 2006.
Gregg succeeds Jay Gellert, President and CEO of Health Net Inc., based in Woodland Hills, California.
“Jay has worked tremendously hard and demonstrated great skill in guiding the Board over the past two years,” Ignagni said.
