Great Plumbing, Air Conditioning Service Drives Berkey’s Phenomenal Growth

Berkey’s Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc., stands out in the crowded field of home service for one simple, but powerful reason: the company has grown at double-digit rates through the worst economic recession in more than 70 years, and continues on that pace in 2010. While many competitors are in decline or going out of business, Berkey’s has moved to a bigger building and increased its workforce by 30 percent.

While many home service companies are fighting for survival, Berkey’s Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning continues to grow at double-digit rates, as it has done the past three years.

Bill Stevens, Berkey’s president, says his company is doing it the old-fashioned way – delivering value in every transaction. “People are looking for value for their dollars, especially in this economy,” Stevens said. “They reward companies that provide returns on their investments and that don’t waste their time.”

Berkey’s grew by 21 percent in 2008, followed by a 17 percent boost in 2009 and is on pace at that rate the first four months of 2010. All growth has been organic and in the company’s primary service area of Northeast Tarrant County and the surrounding area.

That “surrounding area” is enlarging, as the company grows, however. Berkey’s is attracting increasing numbers of new clients in Flower Mound, Lewisville and Denton, as well as in Dallas County and Collin County communities, including Carrollton, Plano, Irving and Frisco. Nearly half of the company’s business comes from referrals by satisfied customers.

Strong growth has required more operating space. In March Berkey’s moved from two buildings that totaled 9,000 feet of office, service and warehouse space into a single location in the same business park with more than 16,000 feet of space. The new space is nearly filled already.

“We had to hold off hiring for several positions until we had someplace to put them,” Stevens said. “We have increased our payroll by 30 percent in the past two months, with new hires in customer service, plumbing, air conditioning and heating departments. Honestly, this kind of growth even surprises us somewhat. ”

Berkey’s is best known for its Universal Protection Plan, a one-of-a-kind service agreement that covers annual tune ups on all central air conditioning, heating and plumbing systems in a house for one payment of $99. The company has thousands of customers who save hundreds of dollars each year on the cost of tune ups alone.

The numbers are compelling. For Berkey’s average customer, with three or more central air and heating systems, the cost of individual $79 tune ups for heating, air conditioning and plumbing systems would be $553. The $99 Universal Protection Plan price provides annual savings of $454 in tune up costs alone.

In addition, service agreement holders get priority treatment in case of emergencies, and discounts on parts, when needed. Berkey’s uses flat-rate pricing instead of hourly, so customers know the price before work begins.

Community involvement also plays a major role in Berkey’s business, from participation in chambers of commerce and local festivals to sponsorships of school classroom and athletic activities, all reinforced by its colorful “rolling billboard” trucks that are a familiar site on North Texas streets every day.

Berkey’s also has built a strong presence on the Internet with a blend of social media, email, newsletters and a content-rich website. The proof of this approach lies not only in strong word-of-mouth advertising and referrals, but glowing customer testimonials mailed in and posted on Berkey’s website.
