American Fitness’ employees are participating in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Portland, Oregon on September 16. This fundraising run and walk is one of a series across the United States focused on raising funds for breast cancer education, screening, treatment, and research. It also celebrates breast cancer survivors and honors those who have lost their lives to the disease.

Breast cancer is a devastating disease and the causes are still largely unknown. All women are at risk for the disease, and most women who get it have no family history. It also occurs in men, though at a much lower rate. While there is currently no way to fully prevent the disease, steps that may reduce the risk include maintaining a healthy weight and increasing exercise. American Fitness recognizes the importance of raising awareness of breast cancer, and supports employees both in advocating for women’s health, as well as strengthening their own personal health and fitness through participation in the fundraising walk or run.

“We are proud to support our employees in participating in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure,” said Ron Thompson, President of AmericanFitness.net. “Many employees have friends or family members who have been impacted by breast cancer. We are honored to support efforts to improve women's health and save lives.”

According to the Oregon affliate, 75% of the funds raised from the Portland Race for the Cure will be spent locally to provide education about early detection, to support survivors and their families, and to provide important free screenings for low income or uninsured women. All of these are critical needs in the fight against the disease. In addition, American Fitness encourages women to make healthy changes to reduce the risk of developing this and other cancers. Regular exercise is a key component of developing a healthy lifestyle. Information on popular strength and cardio exercise equipment used by women of all fitness levels is available at AmericanFitness.net.
