“The American Nuclear Society is a professional association dedicated to advancing humanity’s understanding of nuclear science and technology,” stated ANS President Michael Corradini, PhD.

The American Nuclear Society (ANS) will kick off its 2012 Winter Conference and Nuclear Expo, to be held November 11-15 in San Diego, CA, with an opening plenary session featuring leading experts discussing future nuclear energy technologies.

“The American Nuclear Society is a professional association dedicated to advancing humanity’s understanding of nuclear science and technology,” stated ANS President Michael Corradini, PhD. “The ANS Winter Conference features thought leaders from across the international nuclear community and provides the ideal forum for a productive exchange of the latest information, research findings and developments.”

The theme of this year’s conference is Future Nuclear Technologies: Resilience and Flexibility. The opening plenary session, to be held at 8:30 am on Monday, November 11, includes the following distinguished speakers:

  •     Pete Dietrich (Southern California Edison)
  •     Commissioner George Apostolakis (U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission)
  •     Marv Fertel (Nuclear Energy Institute)
  •     Christine King (Electric Power Research Institute)
  •     Cheri Collins (Southern Company)

The conference will feature an embedded international meeting on Severe Accident Assessment and Management: Lessons Learned from Fukushima Daiichi. Conference attendees will drill down on numerous issues, including adopting a risk-informed approach to regulations and policies; exploring current and potential approaches to managing natural phenomena; and conducting a thorough investigation of all aspects of the accident at Fukushima Daiichi. ANS has played a leadership role in providing fact-based information about the accident at Fukushima Daiichi from shortly after the accident to the present. In March 2012, the American Nuclear Society Special Committee on Fukushima―chaired by Corradini and former NRC Chairman Dale Klein―released a report on Fukushima Daichii in observance of the one-year anniversary of the incident.

The ANS Winter Conference and Nuclear Technology Expo also marks the tenth anniversary of the Generation IV (Gen IV) International Forum. The Gen IV Forum is an international collective of national nuclear leaders working cooperatively on the development of next generation nuclear reactor concepts.

“The innovation we see today in the deployment of new reactor designs is a natural outgrowth of the work of the Gen IV Forum,” remarked Corradini. “Many Gen IV forum leaders are also respected ANS members, and, as ANS President, I am pleased that our Society is hosting the Gen IV International Forum Symposium at this conference.”

The American Nuclear Society welcomes recognized media representatives to attend. To receive press credentials, ANS allows media representatives to register online using the general registration form found at Registration includes access to all education sessions and the exhibit hall. Payment is required for access to any tours, ceremonies, or events for which additional fees are indicated.
