We now have a greater capacity for fundamental research, innovation, functional foods, and demanding technologies

The companies are developing technologies that will result in a pipeline of innovative and healthy functional food products for launch in coming years. These developments will enjoin technologies developed by Anadis, with the innovative efforts of SPC Ardmona, a company renowned for taking packaged fruit into new technologies.

"We find the Anadis R&D team to be creative in their ability to rapidly develop prototypes for products that are both tasty and healthy. Healthy food has always been an important part of our growth strategy and Anadis now plays an important role in a major project in our Technology and Innovation platform. We are exploring, in conjunction with Anadis, a variety of products to deliver the healthiness of fruits in unique and tasty ways" says Nigel Garrard, Managing Director of SPC Ardmona.

SPC recently restructured its R&D function to create the new Technology and Innovation Group, based in Shepparton, Victoria, Australia. "We now have a greater capacity for fundamental research, innovation, functional foods, and demanding technologies" says SPC Ardmona in its announcement.

Dr. Grant Rawlin, VP R&D of Anadis said: "SPC has incredible experience in bringing consumer products into the market, and we are proud that our past investments in R&D for polyclonal antibodies and BioShielding oral antibody delivery technologies could impact an even broader market through daily consumption of healthy foods as part of a healthy lifestyle."

The global functional foods market is a dynamic and rapidly growing segment of the food industry. Research expects it to constitute 5% of the world food market by the year 2010, or around US$165Billion (Market Research, 2004). Functional food is rapidly emerging from being a niche market to a mainstream market category, with large food companies such as Coca Cola (NYSE: KO), Nestle (NESN.VX), Kraft (NYSE:KFT), and Groupe Danone (BN.PA) becoming key players in the global functional foods and beverages marketplace. Solid science regarding safety and efficacy is pivotal in ensuring future market success and consumer confidence.

Dr Oren Fuerst, VP Business Development of Anadis, said: "Collaborations in the functional food arena are becoming an important part of our activities, which cover numerous aspects of the health care sector. Partners from the food and beverage industry are starting to realize the value of our strong scientific foundation in the bioactive ingredients arena and how this could be adapted in the creation of new products that are both healthy as well as tasty. The collaboration with Coca Cola's SPC Ardmona demonstrates another significant growth path of our business."
