Yelp is currently one the largest online local review websites. Accessed by over 78 million unique users a month, Yelp is a source for people to find information and write reviews about businesses in their area. It is popular as a tool for local business online marketing through its advertising system. Yelp is also featured in Apple’s iOS 6 operating system, as the business information provided in the new Apple Maps application is powered by the listings on Yelp.
According to VentureBeat, AmEx’s integration into the Apple Passbook feature will allow AmEx to enter the world of online user reviews in the future by requesting users who use their AmEx card at a local establishment to write a review of it. This would allow them to gain more trusted reviews by people who have actually patronized the business, and would put AmEx into direct competition with companies like Yelp.
