Application Whitelisting with Intelligence

Lumension® Intelligent Whitelisting™ Available April 29th

At the end of the day, it isn’t about blacklists vs. whitelists. It’s more about addressing the risk in the gray area of unknown applications which are exponentially growing and enabling a larger target area for malware to exploit.

The security market has reached a tipping point as the sheer volume of malware exceeds manageable levels and standalone antivirus solutions can no longer keep up, proving ineffective. Lumension®, a global leader in endpoint management and security, today announced the April 29th general availability of Lumension® Intelligent Whitelisting™, a fully integrated endpoint security solution on the Lumension Endpoint Management Security Suite (L.E.M.S.S.).

Lumension® Intelligent Whitelisting™ is the industry’s first application control solution that increases endpoint security effectiveness without impacting business productivity. By integrating traditionally disparate, stand-alone technologies of antivirus, application control and patch management and delivering new innovations in application whitelisting technology, Lumension is delivering a more effective security solution with added flexibility and ease of use.

Intelligent Whitelisting overcomes many of the traditional challenges of stand-alone application control technology. Flexibility has been enhanced through a trust-centric change management engine that allows IT administrators to extend automated whitelist policy management across trusted publishers of digitally signed code, updating software, installation paths, as well as deny unwanted applications. New features also enable IT to fully deploy an application whitelist policy in an audit only mode and log all execution attempts within the whitelisted environment. Policy definition has also been made easier with a local snap-shot capability that captures all existing applications on endpoints and enables IT to quickly define unique whitelist policy baselines in highly variable environments.

In addition to enhanced security, IT operational productivity has been improved with the integration of Lumension® AntiVirus™ and Lumension® Patch Management™ within a seamless application control solution workflow. Anti-Virus can now be used to identify and clean any known malware across the endpoint environment prior to being whitelisted, along with the automatic authorization of new application files every time patches are deployed.

“With one integrated platform, IT now has effective tools to address the rising risk of malware which, as we know, is increasingly focused on 3rd party application vulnerabilities,” said Mike Wittig, President and CTO, Lumension. “By integrating what used to be stand-alone products across common endpoint-management architecture, IT can now improve endpoint security and reduce overall operating costs.”

“Anti-malware agents cannot be the only defense against the bad stuff out there - not if you actually want to protect your devices, anyway. I've harped on this many times, especially regarding the importance of using other tactics on the endpoints (including running updated software and secure configurations) and within the network to compensate for the fact that anti-malware is an inexact science,1” said Mike Rothman, Analyst & President of Securosis.

Lumension Intelligent Whitelisting enables organizations to:

  •     Stop Unknown or Unwanted Applications from Running;
  •     Increase Endpoint Security Effectiveness;
  •     Improve Application Visibility on Endpoints;
  •     Enjoy Flexible, Effective and Easy-To-Use Application Control;
  •     Optimize Organizational Productivity; and,
  •     Reduce Overall Endpoint TCO.

“At the end of the day, it isn’t about blacklists vs. whitelists,” said Pat Clawson, Chairman and CEO, Lumension. “It’s more about addressing the risk in the gray area of unknown applications which are exponentially growing and enabling a larger target area for malware to exploit. To reduce this risk and the costs that go with it, IT must regain control over their application and endpoint environments and do so in such a way that doesn’t impact end user productivity. Until now, that type of IT security solution wasn’t available, but with the Intelligent Whitelisting, organizations can improve endpoint management and security while also reducing the operational headaches associated with traditional stand-alone products.”

Additionally, Lumension announced general availability of its free Application Scanner tool that enables IT professionals to gain new found visibility over applications within their endpoint environment.
