Statistics indicate 40% of travelers experience mild to debilitating gastro-intestinal illness and diarrhea for up to four days, but who would have guessed something as simple as a straw could be the answer, not only to health protection but to a range of global challenges?
Aqua Safe Corporation Pty Ltd announce the release of the AquaSafeStraw portable water filter, taking the risk out of drinking the water, soft drinks, alcohol and ice with a safe and simple purification treatment a child can use.
Weighing only 24 grams and measuring a mere 8" (205mm), this hygienic drinking water straw, capable of purifying up to 132 gallons (500 liters), filters out 99.9999% of all waterborne bacteria plus Giardia and Cryptosporidium protozoa - major causes of diarrhea, vomiting and cramps both home and abroad.
Safe to be stored for up to three years, it's also an ideal precaution for potential survival scenarios.
Totally Safe Portable Water Purifier
Portable water purification methods are traditionally based on the use of chemical compounds, iodine, and chlorine, both of which have potential side effects for children, nursing and pregnant women, for those with thyroid disorders, Graves Disease, and with immune deficiencies.
Even for those not already ruled out, portable water purification using chemicals should only be used on the short term, and pose health risks during long-term use.
AquaSafeStraw is chemical-free, using a micro-fine capillary membrane encased by a polyethersulfone (PES) outer which filters though a filtration size of 0.2 microns, smaller than the smallest bacteria, and well below the CDC (America's Centre of Disease Control and Prevention) recommended Giardia filtration level of 1 micron.
Purification is instant as the user sips through the drinking straw, plus there is no unpleasant after-taste or odor associated with chlorine and iodine based products.
Personally and Environmentally Safer than Bottled Water
Transportation and storage of bottled water can cause the safe level of bacteria normally found in bottled water to blow out to a point where the World Health Organization has issued a specific health warning to children, pregnant women and those with compromised immune systems, and a general warning to all.
Along with growing health awareness, water bottles are increasingly recognized as an environmental disaster already happening. According to a study conducted at Oregon State University's Institute for Water and Watersheds, approximately 72 billion gallons of water are used each year just to manufacture the water bottles. Manufacture and transport account for an average of 62g of CO2 emissions for every one liter bottle produced, with an estimated 20 billion+ bottles sold annually.
Laboratory Tested and Approved
In stringent testing, conducted by a National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) approved laboratory, the AquaSafeStraw water filter has been proven to remove standard plate count bacteria plus Serratia marcescens (rod shaped bacteria found in soil, food, and water, and predominantly in hospitals), Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Pseudomonas diminuta (common bacteria), Escherichia coli (urogenital tract bacteria), Staphylococcus, Fecal Coliforms (common but harmless bacteria which indicate the presence of e-coli), Cryptosporidium, and Giardia protozoa.
