Dr. George Araya of Desert Sands Unified School District in southern California has been honored as one of 50 top technology innovators in education by the Center for Digital Education.
Dr. Araya, the district's Director of Technology, has worked to update hardware and enterprise-level software to support access to technology and use of data to make instructional and administrative decisions. He and his team represented the only school district in California to be singled out for recognition by the SIF (Schools Interoperability Framework) Association, an organization focused on the sharing of data by primary and secondary schools.
The Center for Digital Education yearbook profile says that Dr. Araya advises other education technology leaders to organize priorities with a clear vision of all the resources needed to reach a goal. "He has learned that focusing technology implementations on the benefit of student learning--and combining this with technology tools, strong leadership and teacher excellence--will provide amazing results."
Under Dr. Araya's leadership, the district has seen an increase in student performance and test scores. Data is analyzed in real time, allowing for the immediate understanding and use of it in the classroom. For the past three years, the district has exceeded its goal for increasing student state test scores.
The district uses key components of EDmin's INFORM® Learning System, including a Test Builder and Item Bank to support assessments and a Recommendation Engine to provide digital resources to students.
"Dr. Araya should be congratulated for his dedication to student achievement," said Clayton Hoyle, co-founder of EDmin. "His work is proof that technology can make it possible for every student to succeed."
