Sustainable Products Distinguish Artisan Precast in Today’s Fencing Market

Since 2008, LA-based precast concrete company has set a standard for manufacturing eco-friendly view, sound and barrier walls.

To succeed in today’s global market a company must not only meet the goals in its business plan, but also demonstrate an environmental conscience. In the fencing and foundation field, Artisan Precast of Los Angeles sets an excellent example. The company ( has developed a coast-to-coast client base by offering low-cost, low-maintenance products designed to reduce carbon impact on the planet.

The trend toward practices now known as “green building” has been on Artisan Precast’s radar for years, according to CEO Craig Lewis. Lewis says Artisan has always been conscious of how its materials affect the environment in all phases from manufacturing to installation. Early in 2008, Artisan built new environmentally friendly molds for its wall and fencing products; the molds are now VOC- and mercury-free. The company then revamped its mix design to increase the use of fly ash, a byproduct of coal combustion that improves concrete strength and durability while creating significant benefits for the environment.

Artisan also uses water-based released agents and recycled materials in their concrete production. According to the EPA, construction materials lend themselves to recycling because the recycled components have many of the same chemical and physical properties as the virgin materials they replace, and sometimes even improve the quality of a product. This is certainly the case with the Artisan line—using recycled cementitious material reduces the cement content while still yielding a product with strength of 5,000 psi or greater. Lewis estimates their fencing uses 30% less concrete than standard masonry block, while their foundations use up to 60% less.

In addition, Artisan Precast products require no painting or staining, because the color is mixed into the concrete. Eliminating painting on project sites further avoids VOC release into the air. Integral color means no repainting, zero maintenance, and long-lasting aesthetic appeal.

Artisan Precast is setting a standard for the fencing and foundation market, providing products an ecologically-conscious client can feel good about choosing. More information about the company and what it has to offer can be found on the website.
