What do Picasso, Kandinsky, and Chagall have in common with Dean Baer? They have all designed stunning art to adorn the labels of prestigious wines. The Capital Grille, a national upscale restaurant, held an art competition recently. Out of more than 500 images that were submitted by artists from across the country, a work titled "At Peace" by Wisconsin-born artist Dean Baer was selected.

Every aspect of this venture is first-class: an award-winning restaurant (The Capital Grille) with an award winning wine program designed by Master Sommelier, George Miliotes. The very limited production (7,620 bottles) Cabernet blend has been produced exclusively by Atalon Winery (in Napa, California) for The Capital Grille, to be served at their 40 nationwide restaurants during March and April, 2010.

A private dinner party to honor the artist and wine was held March 4th at The Capital Grille in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, where both the label and wine were unveiled. The very gracious invitation was attended by those responsible for this creative undertaking and close friends and associates of the artist. "Out of all the wines I have tasted while living in Europe and the US, this Cabernet Sauvignon stands out among the best. I am humbled and honored to have my image 'At Peace' associated with such a fine wine," said Baer.

To enhance this project, The Capital Grille will be donating partial proceeds from the wine sales to Share Our Strength, an organization which works to make sure that no child in America goes hungry. Baer has a long history of working for charitable causes and this aspect of the competition was especially appealing to him.

Because the label would have no writing on it, leaving the art to speak for itself, it was imperative that the image convey the very essence of the wine. "At Peace" depicts two entwined human figures with simple but sophisticated shapes. The rich red and golden hues reflect the colors of the sun-drenched red grapes covering the tangled vines across the Napa Valley. For anyone who has ever visited this area, or who has experienced a fine red wine, this imagery is perfection!

ABOUT THE ARTIST: A native of Wisconsin, nationally-recognized artist Dean Baer has lived and studied throughout the US and Europe. He defines himself as an Expressionist/Abstract painter, one who prefers to express himself outside the boundaries of the conventional. A sculptor at heart, he strives to incorporate form, as many human landscapes emerge during the creative process. He relies entirely on inspiration, and has been sought out by many philanthropic causes to portray the essence of their own unique missions. His own life remains a mission, to challenge and remove barriers that often constrain the artist.
