artnet Auctions presents the CHAI MoDERN Benefit sale, composed of works from Varial and Nadjari’s art-documentary project, The Wakhan Journey.
Last year, Fabrice Nadjari and Cedric Houin—together known as Varial and Nadjari—embarked on a journey across the mountainous passage between Afghanistan and China known as the Wakhan Corridor, traveling more than 300 kilometers on foot. Conducted through photos, videos, and installations, The Wakhan Project is the photographers’ homage to this remote corridor, its cultures, and inhabitants.
An important highlight of the sale is Gazkhan 2 (2011). This image is from Varial and Nadjari’s Traces of Time series, which is a subset of The Wakhan Journey. The works in this series show members of the Kyrgyj and Wakhi tribes as they react to Polaroids that the photographers took of them. Many of their subjects had never been photographed before. Whether displaying it proudly or using it to hide behind, the subjects’ responses to their new Polaroid portraits are both touching and inspiring. There are 28 works from the Traces of Time series available on artnet Auctions as part of this benefit sale.
Proceeds will benefit CHAI MoDERN, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting a greater understanding of issues related to identity by supporting established and emerging artists who express their passionate concern for this mission through their artwork. The Varial and Nadjari exhibition at MILK Gallery in New York runs from May 18 through May 22, 2012.
The CHAI MoDERN Benefit sale is live on artnet Auctions through May 24, 2012.
