Ciclo 1961 B-2 by Emilio Vedova

Emilio Vedova Ciclo 1961 B-2, 1961 Collage and mixed media on canvas 57 x 73 in. Est. US$600,000–800,000

artnet Auctions is pleased to offer Ciclo 1961 B-2, a rarely available, large-scale painting by Emilio Vedova (Italian, 1919–2006), who is considered to be one of the most important painters to emerge from Italy’s artistic scene after World War II. This work is a prime example of Vedova’s sought-after Ciclo series, which the artist developed from the 1950s to the 1980s. Estimated at US$600,000 to 800,000, Vedova’s Ciclo 1961 B-2 is an exemplary, vibrant abstraction that is among the very best examples to become available at auction. The work will be live on artnet Auctions from November 8 to 20, 2012.

Executed in Venice in 1961, Ciclo 1961 B-2 was included in a notable solo exhibition of the artist’s work at the Stedelijk van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Reflecting both the political and social struggles of the past and the recent political freedom in postwar Italy, Vedova’s revolutionary paintings are charged with raw movement and gesture, exploring the frontiers of abstraction. Often related to the Abstract Expressionist artworks coming out of the United States, Vedova’s enigmatic works were integral to the developing conversation between Abstraction and Realism in postwar Europe.

Vedova’s Ciclo 1961 B-2 is live on artnet Auctions from November 8 to 20, 2012 at
