Amanda Lepore: Mirror Image by David LaChapelle

David LaChapelle Amanda Lepore: Mirror Image, 1999 C-print photograph Edition of 3 60 x 50 in. Est. US$35,000–45,000

New York / Berlin (PRWEB) March 22, 2013

artnet Auctions is proud to present On the Rocks, an exciting new sale showcasing over 50 works by the most cutting-edge Contemporary artists, who express the generation’s creative compulsions toward beauty and aggression. From flashy diamond or gold-encrusted works on canvas to classic black-and-white celebrity portraits, this sale illustrates works which exhibit the Contemporary artist’s desire to reach new ideals. Including established as well as emerging artists of various backgrounds, this sale offers works that express the raw nature of human desire.

One exciting highlight of the sale is David LaChapelle’s Amanda Lepore: Mirror Image (1999), estimated at US$35,000 to 45,000. This is the first time the rare, limited edition photograph, which exposes the extremes of playful erotica and entertainment, has ever been offered on artnet Auctions. Another intriguing work is Jim Morrison’s Bet (2013) by Los Angeles-based artist Desire Obtain Cherish. This piece displays the iconic portrait of Jim Morrison in 4,700 individually wrapped pills encased in Plexiglas. The formal structure and style of the organized pills ironically counteracts the subject, who symbolizes the chaotic rock and roll lifestyle. The auction also includes Damien Hirst’s Gold Tears (2012), a spectacular print with glaze foil block, which brilliantly displays shelves of gold and diamonds, symbolizing love, desire, and perfection.

On the Rocks offers a selection of works that epitomize the marriage of high art, fashion, and music with the obsession of success and materialism embraced by contemporary culture. Estimates in the sale range from US$2,000 to 35,000.

On the Rocks is live on artnet Auctions from March 21 through 28, 2013, and on view here.
