ArtSchools.com, a directory of art schools in California, discusses how music, specifically writing lyrics and composing music videos, can improve resilience in young cancer patients.
According to a January 27th article published by Science Daily titled “Music therapy’s positive effects on young cancer patients’ coping skills, social integration,” a new study published in the American Cancer Society’s journal, “Cancer,” found that young adults with cancer could foster new coping skills and improve resilience when they participate in therapeutic music activities.
The article says that the music therapy sessions “provide essential psychosocial support,” which helps the patients adjust to the disease in a positive way. “Through the creative process of writing song lyrics and producing videos, a board-certified music therapist offers structure and support to help patients reflect on their experiences and identify what is important to them, such as their spirituality, family, and relationships with peers and healthcare providers,” the article says.
Andrew Girard, a representative from ArtSchools.com, says art, especially music, is a mechanism for individuals to express themselves. “Music allows people to express things that they are too afraid to say out loud,” he says. “Writing the lyrics allows these children to express feelings and emotions that may otherwise be internally suppressed. Art, and music, can truly open the soul. Using it to help cancer patients develop stronger coping skills is a great idea. Not only will it help to get these kids thinking creatively, it will also help them have fun and express what they are feeling. This method could be expanded to help many different types of illnesses. Music, as one of the leading forms of art, can really do more than just entertain.”
