Eagle Ridge of Decatur, a BMA affordable assisted living community, is hosting a low impact workout for older adults at 10 a.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The community, which is located at 875 W. McKinley Ave. in Decatur, Illinois, serves older adults of all incomes, including those on Medicaid, who need some help to maintain their independence.

"We are offering the exercise program as part of our Eat Smart, Live Strong Initiative," says Amy Bretz, Administrator of Eagle Ridge of Decatur. "This half-hour of specialized physical activity was developed and has been tested by professionals in aging and is led by Mary Hooker, our Resident Services Coordinator."

"We invite you to come and join us," Bretz adds. There is no cost to attend.

The Eat Smart, Live Strong Initiative was designed by BMA Management, Ltd., the company that manages Eagle Ridge, to improve the health and nutritional habits of assisted living residents.

The Assisted Living Federation of America recently awarded a 2013 Best of the Best award to BMA in recognition of the initiative.

BMA has managed Eagle Ridge since the community opened for occupancy ten years ago, says Bretz.

The company, which is based in Bradley, Illinois, is the largest provider of assisted living in Illinois.

"Our focus," says Rod Burkett, President and CEO of BMA, "is to provide residents with the love, compassion and dignity that they deserve and the help and assistance that they need. Our emphasis is on helping each resident to achieve and maintain as much independence as possible for as long as possible."

Communities such as Eagle Ridge provide older adults with a wonderful alternative to a nursing home or to struggling alone at home, says Burkett.

Bretz adds that "residents benefit from living in a residential apartment-home environment and receiving personal assistance and help with medications."

Private studio and one-bedroom apartments are available, with each of the apartments featuring a kitchenette, spacious bathroom with shower and grab bars, individually controlled heating and air conditioning and an emergency alert system.

Certified nursing assistants, working under the direction of a licensed nurse, are on-duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week. All three meals each day, housekeeping and laundry are among the included services.

"Residents also benefit from all of the opportunities that are available to socialize with friends and neighbors and to participate in activities and special programs such as low-impact exercise program," says Bretz.

Among the communities managed by BMA are the Heritage Woods affordable assisted living communities in Charleston and Watseka, Illinois; the Bowman Estates affordable assisted living community in Danville; and the Prairie Winds affordable assisted living community in Urbana.

BMA also manages the Bridle Brook of Mahomet assisted living and memory care community in Champaign County.
