The Ashby House, one of Atlanta's last traditional rooming houses, has been approved by the U.S. Veteran's Administration for a second year to provide affordable housing for veterans.

Ashby House offers a very unique opportunity for persons engaged in transitions to do so in a home-style environment

Conveniently located just two miles from downtown in the historic Washington Park neighborhood, Ashby House offers safe, comfortable extended stay lodging for active retirees, persons on fixed incomes, working adults, and veterans. Amenities abound. The Ashby House is within walking distance of MARTA bus and rail service, a public library, recreational facilities, banks, and eateries. The City recently announced that a Wal-Mart is coming soon -- just a few blocks away.

"Ashby House offers a very unique opportunity for persons engaged in transitions to do so in a home-style environment," explained Dwight McCrary, co-founder and owner. "Often, people just need a safe place to regroup. Sometimes, they decide to make Ashby their home. Either way, we do our best to make everyone feel secure and welcome."

A family-owned business, Ashby House caters to residents with a concierge-style approach that includes a front office, on-site maintenance, and free tickets to major sporting events. "Residents cook and share meals together. They relax on the porch and talk together. They shop and walk the fitness track together. And when they want privacy, they retire to their rooms," added Gaile Aaron, Office Manager. Ashby House welcomes men and women but Aaron says it operates successfully because everyone adheres to some basic "house" rules.

Ashby's single room occupancy units are comfortably furnished and its shared facilities encourage lasting friendships. "I love Ashby House because the rates are reasonable, the place is clean and everybody is nice to you," said Oliver Deaton, Jr., a former Marine and long-time resident.

Ashby House is believed to be the only rooming house approved as a VA property. For more information, visit or call 404-758-1000.
