Using this advanced technology, their Radiologist, Carolyn G. Dudley, M.D., can now more accurately screen and detect potential breast cancers.

Digital Breast Tomosynthesis is an innovative method for detecting breast cancer and is offered as a complement to a 2D screening mammogram. The process involves taking a series of images from multiple angles around the breast. A computer then reconstructs the images to provide a 3D model of the breast. The 3D view improves Radiologists’ ability to screen and detect potential breast cancers and enables them to pinpoint the size, shape and location of abnormalities. This advanced screening method results in fewer callbacks and less anxiety for patients.

The 3D mammogram is performed at the same time as standard digital mammography and on the same scanner so there is no added time or difference in experience for the patient. In the past, 3D mammography was only available in Georgia in a large hospital setting which required many patients to travel long distances in order to receive a 3D mammogram. Having 3D technology available in an outpatient diagnostic imaging center setting leads to reduced costs and greater convenience for patients in Georgia.
