Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) October 23, 2012
Cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Benjamin Stong of Kalos Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is the first Atlanta facial plastic surgeon to perform a surgery for patients seeking help to restore their smile affected by facial paralysis. The temporalis tendon transfer surgery has been used in recent years to rehabilitate the smile of patients who suffer from facial paralysis caused by conditions such as strokes, cancer, trauma, surgeries and Bell’s palsy. Dr. Stong not only performed the first temporalis tendon transfer in Atlanta, but also used the newest, most advanced, minimally invasive technique available.
“Patients who suffer from facial nerve damage are often affected by loss of motor movement to the face, thus affecting their ability to smile, close their eyes, chew, or raise their eyebrows. It can be quite devastating,” said Dr. Stong.
Historically, facial paralysis treatments to restore the smile have been less than effective, often with disappointing results. The temporalis tendon transfer has been proven to be a more effective method to restore motion to the affected corner of the mouth. The procedure has gone through several evolutions recently, and the minimally invasive technique has resulted in less downtime with dramatic results within the first few weeks of surgery. In addition, it is performed as an outpatient procedure. The surgery involves detaching the temporalis muscle, one of the muscles involved in closing the jaw while chewing, and rerouting and attaching it to the corner of the mouth to allow movement, better function of the mouth, and the ability to smile. The whole process takes approximately 90 minutes.
“This procedure has improved the quality of many lives and restored confidence in facial paralysis victims,” said Dr. Stong. “We are proud to bring this innovative procedure to the Atlanta Metropolitan Area in addition to the state-of-the-art cosmetic facial plastic surgery procedures we currently offer.”
