To move still closer to its customers, the Atlas Copco Portable Air division reinforces the divisional marketing organization to a new regional marketing organization. Jim O’ Brien, Ben Van Hove and Mukul Chakravorty have been appointed as new regional marketing managers for the regions in this matrix structure.

“For effective production and marketing, it’s important that we’re close to our customers, says VP marketing John Hort; “With the divisional headquarters in Europe a lot of focus went to this latter region in the past. We now want the same proximity in all regions of the world; therefore we are appointing regional marketing managers in each region.”

The Portable Air division discerns four regions; first China, East Asia & Australia, then India & Africa, the Americas and Europe. For the first three regions three new regional marketing managers have been appointed. Jim O’Brien was appointed Regional Marketing Manager China, East Asia & Australia. Ben Van Hove will be the regional Marketing Manager Portable Air Americas. And Mukul Chakravorty will be responsible for India and Africa.

“As the headquarters of Portable Air are situated in Belgium, Europe, and all product managers are still based there, for Europe no extra regional marketing manager will be appointed at first instance;” John adds; “The introduction of our new matrix structure will not result in a different marketing structure for each region: rather, it will allow a more optimized way of working. Product managers, key accounts and communications will all have a more regional focus.”

Jim O’Brien began his career in Banking and finance as manager and eventually as regional manager. He joined the Atlas Copco Group in the US in 2000 as Regional Manager for Chicago Pneumatic Tools. In 2003 he was appointed Key account manager for North America. Jim moved to the Portable Air division in 2007 as key Account Manager and later assumed responsibility for management and marketing of different brands within the Atlas Copco group. In March 2010, Jim was appointed Regional Marketing Manager Portable Air China, East Asia & Australia. For his new function, he is based in Shanghai China.

On the new organization Jim O’Brien says; “By being closer it will be easier to make decisions that affect the region, adapting to the needs of each individual country.”

Ben Van Hove started at Atlas Copco as project engineer in 1994. Later he became project leader and Engineering Manager Quality Air solutions. In 2004 he went to China as Project Manager to start up the production for the Portable Air division. In 2007 Ben became General Manager of the newly acquired Greenfield Europe and set-up the sales and service organization. As of July 2010 he will be the regional Marketing Manager Portable Air for the Americas.

Ben Van Hove sees opportunities in his new function; “The American team today is already doing a fantastic job. What I will be able to add are some opportunities in new territories, segments and applications and report back local requirements to the divisions.”

Mukul Chakravorty, a mining engineer by qualification, started his career in sales and marketing in Sandvik Asia in 1991 and moved to Atlas Copco Construction & Mining Technique in 1993 . In 1996 he moved out of the Atlas Copco group to an Atlas Copco distributor where he also managed the dealership for hydraulic excavators. This experience in managing distribution channels gave him a good insight in satisfying customer needs. In 2005 he came back to Atlas Copco as Business manager Portable Air India and turned the business figures into a positive trend . In April 2010, Mukul was appointed Regional Marketing Manager Portable Air for the India and Africa Region. He continues to be based in India .

“This new set-up will enable us to develop focused strategies and make the execution of the strategies in the countries easier.”
