The Augusta Margaret River Tourism Association is celebrating the naming of Margaret River as ‘Australia’s Best Town’. The town also received this People’s Choice Award from Australian Traveller Magazine, in 2011.

The Magazine, in its latest issue, says the reasons for the award going to this ‘much-loved capital of wine and waves in WA’s far southwest’ was encapsulated by one reader who wrote of its “awesome blend of surf, vines, beer, forest and gourmet food”.

The members and staff from the Augusta Margaret River Tourism Association (AMRTA) are, not surprisingly, delighted with the award.

“This is the second year in a row that we’ve received the People’s Choice Award, which is immensely important to us” said Simon Ambrose, from AMRTA. “It demonstrates to us that we are meeting, even surpassing, the expectations of visitors to the region.”

“We understand our visitors because we come face to face with them every day - at our Visitor Centres in Augusta and Margaret River, and at different facilities that we manage, including the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse and the Jewel, Lake and Mammoth Caves” he continued.

“The town of Margaret River itself is a great place for visitors to begin their exploration of the regions many attractions. It has a wide range of accommodation options, from B&Bs to luxury resorts, and it is in easy reach of the many first-class vineyards and pristine beaches” said Mr Ambrose.

“We believe that the diversity of the Margaret River region, and the commitment of local businesses to embrace the tourism sector, contributed greatly to the town receiving the Award.”

Visitor Centres

We manage both the Margaret River Visitor Centre and the Augusta Visitor Centre, offering a wide variety of services and activities. Our centres welcome over 285,000 visitors per year. Some 300 telephone inquiries are handled by our expert staff each day. Both visitor centres are accredited with the Tourism Council of Western Australia. In 2012 AMRTA was awarded the gold medal in the Visitor Information Services category at the WA Tourism Awards, enhancing its status as one of the nation’s best.

Caves and Lighthouse

AMRTA also manages five of Western Australia’s most extraordinary attractions. Jewel, Lake, Mammoth and Moondyne Caves lie beneath the towering karri trees and wildflowers. Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse stands at the meeting place of the Southern and Indian Oceans, Australia’s most southwestern point.
