The four titles in the Tulsa Series, authored by Norma Jean Lutz and first published by Barbour Publishing, are experiencing a comeback. “The books are timeless,” says Norma Jean. “While they are set against the backdrop of the 1921 Tulsa Race Riot, the stories are about human drama – how highly moral people struggle against dark, sinister forces bent on destruction.”
Tulsa Turning stars a young up-and-coming New York City newspaper reporter, Clarette Fortier. In a day and time when women were unwelcome in the newsroom, Clarette is undaunted. When her editor ships her out to Tulsa to cover the recent “negro uprising,” she tackles the assignment with gusto, even in the face of death threats. “Clarette quickly became one of my favorite characters,” says Norma Jean. “She’s gutsy and decisive. In spite of having a family fortune at her disposal, she ignores it to follow her dreams.”
While Tulsa in the 1920s was looked upon as a progressive city (it boasted more than 50 millionaires within its citizenry), still and yet it was replete with grievous lawlessness. It was due to this level of lawlessness that the devastating riot occurred.
A review by Romance Readers at Heart had this to say about Tulsa Turning:
“Tulsa Turning is another riveting story told in a time when the lines between black and whites were clearly drawn. It's also told in a time where women weren't easily accepted by men in the work place. Two sensitive topics, woven intricately together to form an incredibly wonderful read. Another recommended book!”
