“This exciting mid-tech device can be used for a wide variety of applications including as a therapy tool, as an introduction to AAC, as a transition to high-tech, as bilingual support, and as a classroom tool."

Rehabmart.com, an online e-commerce company that sells rehabilitation and medical supplies, has recently joined into a distribution partnership with ProxTalker, LLC, to offer their augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices for autism and other special needs to a wider consumer audience. Headquartered in Waterbury, Connecticut, ProxTalker.com has quickly grown into an international presence since its founding in 2007 with its state-of-the-art LOGAN® PROXTALKER®. Designed by ProxTalker President, Glen Dobbs, and his colleague and friend, Kevin Miller, this invention began as a labor of love for Dobbs’ autistic son, Logan.
Already successfully using the PECS (Picture Exchange Communication) system to communicate, Logan had still not achieved any level of verbal output. As Dobbs explains, “I am sure I am not alone as a parent of a non-verbal child that we wanted Logan to have a ‘voice’. He had developed good use of PECS but it did not help him order his Taco Bell or McDonalds, nor did it allow him to communicate with us on the phone.” While the Dobbs family looked at a lot of AAC devices already on the market, they just couldn’t find the right match for Logan. Subsequently, the engineer in Dobbs took over and after many long hours with close friends and colleagues, the design for the PROXTALKER® was hatched and well on its way to changing the face of the AAC industry.
Utilizing RFID technology to play stored words through pictures and icons, the amazing Logan® PROXTALKER® plays clear, real words spoken in the human voice when any user presses the corresponding icon tag for the desired word. Simply pick a tag, place it on the button and press, and this innovative device will speak the word represented. New words can quickly be recorded onto custom cards with a built-in microphone, and new symbols can be added in the forms of stickers, which are included. Logan himself has a lot of different symbols and pictures on his own PROXTALKER®, and has had his family and caregivers all record sounds and words on ‘sound tags’, delighting in using all of these different voices to ‘talk’.
Compatible with other moveable picture communication systems, this tough device features an incredibly robust and water resistant design that will withstand even the heaviest use, inside and outside. Completely portable, the PROXTALKER® can be taken anywhere and everywhere for enhancing communication in every situation. “We are proud to introduce the PROXTALKER® and all of the other cutting edge AAC devices from ProxTalker.com to more consumers,” said Hulet Smith, OTR/L, MBA and CEO of Rehabmart. “This exciting mid-tech device can be used for a wide variety of applications including as a therapy tool, as an introduction to AAC, as a transition to high-tech, as bilingual support, as a classroom tool or as a total functional communication system for children and adults who are non-verbal. Available in a wide variety of styles and special options, everyone will be sure to find exactly the right configurations to customize these AAC devices to meet their own specific requirements in communication enhancement.”
