UM insurance is the most important type of car insurance you can buy.
(PRWEB) May 30, 2012
Atlanta auto accident lawyer Brandon Hornsby has announced that Georgia consumers should follow three golden rules when purchasing Georgia uninsured motorist coverage.
“When I purchased my car insurance, I thought I would be fully protected. I was so wrong. The other driver had no insurance. Because I didn't have UM insurance, I ended up being on the hook for all of my medical bills and there was no insurance to pay for my lost wages,” explains Jen, a Marietta, GA mother-of-two.
“Jen’s experience is not uncommon. Every Georgian should purchase uninsured motorist insurance,” says Hornsby. “The insurance industry won’t tell you this, but UM insurance is the most important car insurance you can buy. That’s why we always tell our clients to follow three golden rules when buying car insurance.”

Why is UM Coverage So Important?
When you get hurt in a car accident, the at-fault driver’s liability insurance is supposed to protect you.
But what happens if the driver does not have enough liability insurance? Even worse, what happens if the driver has no liability insurance at all?
In both situations the answer is that you will only be fully protected if you have UM insurance.
Liability Insurance and UM Insurance Are Different
Georgia law requires every driver to purchase a minimum amount of automobile liability insurance. When someone purchases minimum limits they are buying liability insurance coverage.
Liability insurance only pays money to someone else if you injure someone else or damage their property. Liability insurance does not pay money to you if you are injured.
UM insurance is different.
UM insurance is additional insurance. It pays you for your own injuries if you are hurt by an at-fault driver who is uninsured or underinsured.
A driver is uninsured if the driver has no liability insurance. A driver is underinsured if he or she has some liability insurance, but not enough to fully pay for your injuries.
UM insurance can pay your medical bills. It can pay your lost wages. It can pay for your pain and suffering.
Liability insurance will never do any of these things.
What Are My UM Insurance Choices?
In Georgia, you have three main choices when it comes to purchasing UM insurance.
► No UM Insurance: This is the worst choice. If you make this choice you will not be fully protected if an at-fault driver hurts you and has no liability insurance.
► Non-Stacking UM Insurance: Non-Stacking UM insurance provides less protection than Stacking UM, but more protection than having no UM insurance. Non-Stacking UM insurance pays you the difference between the policy limits of your UM policy and the policy limits of the at-fault driver’s liability policy.
► Stacking UM Insurance: Stacking UM insurance is the best choice. Stacking UM pays you up to the full amount of your UM policy after the policy limits of the at-fault driver’s liability policy is exhausted. That is, it stacks on top of the at-fault driver’s liability policy allowing you to add the coverage of both policies together.
What the Insurance Industry Won’t Tell You
UM insurance is cheap.
In fact, it is perhaps the biggest bargain you can get when it comes to buying auto insurance.
Many insurance companies do not want you to know about UM coverage because it is a low profit and high risk product for the insurance industry.
