Eight people have been confirmed dead, and dozens more injured, after a tour bus lost control and collided with a pickup truck Sunday night, CBS reports. The death toll originally stood at 7, but the number rose to 8 on Wednesday, after authorities announced that the driver of the pickup truck had died at Loma Linda University Medical Center.
According to CBS, the pickup truck driver was 72-year-old Fred Bailey Richardson, a local landscaper with a wife and two grown children. Bailey was towing a trailer full of equipment on Sunday night, when his truck was struck head-on by the bus. The driver of the bus told investigators that the brakes failed as he descended a steep slope on Highway 38. Federal records pointed to a history of brake-maintenance problems with the European-made bus. The investigation is ongoing.
The CBS report cites fatigue, driver error and unsafe road conditions as possible factors in the devastating crash. Many of the surviving victims still remain in critical condition. Jeff Nadrich, a Los Angeles-based auto accident attorney, has been observing these types of cases for a quarter century, and recently weighed in about the crash.
According to Nadrich, “The information uncovered so far seems to indicate that this accident was highly avoidable, and it’s tragic to think that 8 lives may have been spared if not for unsafe driving practices or poorly-maintained machinery. The families of the deceased, as well as the survivors, may be entitled to monetary compensation in light of these circumstances.”
Nadrich encourages all auto accident victims to seek medical attention immediately, and then to speak with a qualified attorney to learn more about their options.
