Oakland, CA (PRWEB) May 13, 2013
Automotive fatalities in the United States rose more than 5 percent in 2012 to 34,080, according to new estimates from the Governors Highway Safety Association, and as reported by USA Today. The rise is notable because it marks the first time in almost a decade that such an increase has occurred. Since 2005, road deaths have reportedly been declining, but the trend is now changing.
According to USA Today, the trend is being attributed—at least in part—to increased road activity with the improving economy. As the article notes, the number vehicle miles traveled in 2012 rose by 9.1 billion, or 0.3% in total. The trend is especially high among motorcyclists, who experienced a 14.7% increase in fatalities.
"The news, while disheartening, is not surprising," said Barbara Harsha, executive director of the Governors Highway Safety Association, in an official press release. "With the improving economy and historically low levels of motor vehicle deaths in recent years, we expected deaths to increase. Highway deaths have been declining significantly in recent years."
Oakland auto accident lawyer Jeff Nadrich has worked with the families of such victims, and recently commented on the shifting trend. According to Nadrich, “We can theorize and hypothesize about the reasons behind the increased fatality rate, but that’s of little comfort to the families of victims. The fact is that regardless of how crowded the roads may be, every driver has a responsibility to use common sense, drive defensively and obey the laws, if not for their own safety, then for the safety of their fellow human being.”
Nadrich urges anyone who has been impacted by an auto accident—whether as a result of a personal injury or loss of a loved one—to contact a qualified personal injury lawyer right away.
