For many people, losing a much-loved pet can be as devastating as the loss of a family member

The British has long been held up as a nation of animal lovers, famed for bestowing as much love on their furry companions as on members of their families. From this month, pet owners will be able to take that devotion one step further: the launch of a new funeral plan service specifically for pets will ensure that the death of a beloved animal is marked by a proper funeral.
Avalon, the UK’s leading independent provider of funeral plans, has launched the country’s first pet plan, which will offer pet owners the option of laying their animals to rest in a fitting manner. The launch coincides with this year’s National Pet Month, which runs from 3 April to 3 May.
Echoing Avalon’s more conventional funeral plans, the plan caters for individual tastes, spanning floral tributes and meaningful music to ensure a highly personal send-off. The plan will be available for all types of pet.
Mike Cooper, managing director at Avalon, explains: “We’d started to receive enquiries from our existing customers about pet funerals and so decided to develop a bespoke plan for pets.
“For many people, losing a much-loved pet can be as devastating as the loss of a family member. Holding a tailored funeral which brings together family members is a lovely way to say goodbye and celebrate a close companionship.”
The newly launched plan offers people the opportunity to arrange and pay for the funeral while their pet is still alive. This mitigates stress at the time of the actual death, and avoids financial worry during a period of mourning. It also guarantees that the animal will not be subjected to the ignominy of being disposed of by a vet – something which families find particularly upsetting.
74-year-old Alan Hayne from Stockport has been inseparable from his Alsatian Rocky, for the past 12 years. He has opted to take out a Pet Plan with Avalon to ensure that Rocky is cremated in a personal ceremony.
He said: “I can honestly say that Rocky has been one of the most loving and loyal friends I’ve ever had and, when the time comes, I want her to have the send-off she deserves.”
Alongside its groundbreaking pet plan, which offers cremations and burials, Avalon offers fully bespoke plans for people, allowing them to plan their own funeral, and ensuring there is no financial strain for grieving families.
Pet plans cost from £67.00. For more information visit, avalon-trustee.co.uk, or call 0161 486 2020
