This is a story about what it means to give back in the most selfless way possible. Evelyn Rogers, 87-years-young, has volunteered with Avamere at Sherwood for over 10 years, and recently received the "Volunteer of the Year" award from OHCA.
Lisa Watts, Executive Director for Avamere at Sherwood, says Evelyn’s up-beat, outgoing attitude is central to her success as a volunteer and on top of that, her age makes her older than most of the Avamere at Sherwood residents. "Evelyn always contributes to the positive well-being of the residents and the morale around our campus. She brings a special kind of vibrancy and excitement that the residents and staff absolutely cherish," says Watts.
Evelyn has visited the Senior Assisted Living community every day for more than a decade, which is one of the many reasons she deserves this recognition. "Evelyn does everything! She comes in around 11 AM to help with activities and stays until well after her expected shift is over," says Sabrina Thompson, Activities Director. "She’ll go grocery shopping, host activities when I’m not here, and is a constant source of kindness, enjoyment, and warmth for our staff and residents."

During the awards ceremony, OHCA representatives highlighted Evelyn’s drive to perform above and beyond the call of duty and provide comfort to residents, family members, and enhance the culture of Avamere at Sherwood.
"Her integrity and high standard of ethical behavior has really influenced our entire staff and directly impacted the work environment," says Nicolette Merino, Regional Director of Operations for Avamere. "Volunteers are in so many ways vital to the day-to-day operations in all of our communities. We’re grateful to have people like Evelyn having such a positive influence on every individual they encounter."
