At any one time, there are more than 150 computers and servers in use on the network, so the potential for infection is pretty high. When I came on board, the school was using Symantec's Norton AntiVirus to keep the network clean. While the software has a good reputation for ease of use, my experience with the product was not too good at keeping viruses out.

Brett Letkehus, Technology Coordinator at Jefferson High School in Boulder, Montana, has been a devoted fan of AVG's security products for his home computer for many years. It took rather longer - and a lot of virus infections - before he was able to convince the school to adopt the same powerful AVG technology for its network.
"Jefferson High has 20 teachers, 20 administrative staff, and around 270 students," said Letkehus. "At any one time, there are more than 150 computers and servers in use on the network, so the potential for infection is pretty high. When I came on board, the school was using Symantec's Norton AntiVirus to keep the network clean. While the software has a good reputation for ease of use, my experience with the product was not too good at keeping viruses out."
Two years ago, Letkehus concluded that he had had enough of cleaning up after his existing security solution, and made the decision to switch the school over to AVG Anti-Virus Network Edition software, While he knew the software was more than powerful enough for the task of keeping viruses off PCs, Letkehus did not have experience with the network versions, so he was keen to find a supplier who could support him through the initial stages of getting up and running with the system.
"We contacted the AVG US office to ask their advice on who might be the best supplier for us to work with," Letkehus said. "They pointed us in the direction of Walling Data because they not only specialized in providing AVG products and support to the education market but also offered significant discounts to educational institutions. It sounded like a winning combination to me!"
Walling Data is the longest-standing and highest-volume distributor of AVG Technologies solutions in North America. It is also the only distributor to offer all its customers free, unlimited, U.S.-based pre- and post-sales support.
"By the time we came to install AVG Anti-Virus Network Edition on the network, we had viruses on 120 of our computers - that's 75% of the school's PCs - and the infections were spreading like wildfire," Letkehus said. "It seemed that every time we booted the network, another system would fall victim to the epidemic. Once the AVG software was up and running, it was busy for 12 to 14 hours quarantining and rescanning all of our computers to make sure that they were clean and free of all traces of the viruses. Within the first day of buying AVG, it proved to us that it was money well spent."
Letkehus said that since he switched the school over to AVG protection, neither he nor the school has had any regrets. He couldn't have been happier to find that the network software provided the same high-powered, unobtrusive protection for the school as he had experienced on his home machines for years. And the partnership with Walling Data has proved a real benefit as well.
"The decision to switch to AVG protection was definitely the right move for us," said Letkehus. "The software is extremely easy to use, and the remote administration tool makes it a simple task for me to check the security status of any machine on the network. On the few occasions when I've come across a function I couldn't quite figure out, a quick call to Walling Data's no-cost support has cleared things up for me in just minutes. Walling's service has been impeccable, and we could not have asked for a better return on investment for this combination of protection, professionalism, and performance."
