American Writers & Artists Inc. (AWAI), has named the winner of its annual Copywriter of the Year Award.

Industry veteran Richard Armstrong was presented with this honor by his long-time friend and previous Copywriter of the Year Bob Bly during AWAI’s annual FastTrack to Copywriting Success Bootcamp and Job Fair.

“We give this award every year. It’s a real pride of ours to acknowledge the legends and masters within our industry,” said Katie Yeakle, AWAI’s Executive Director.

Armstrong is one of the world’s leading direct-response copywriters, specializing in publishing, membership, and fundraising. One of his first clients was Bob Hope. And a press release he wrote almost won an Oscar. He’s worked with Boardroom, Inc., Reader’s Digest, Prevention Health Books, the ASPCA, and the Natural Resources Defense Council, among many other clients.

Prior to his AWAI award, he had received many industry accolades during his 30-year career, such as the Caples Award, the Echo Award, the Maxi Award, and the Maxwell Sackheim Award for “Distinctive Achievement in Direct Marketing.”

During his acceptance speech, Armstrong praised the Bootcamp attendees for actively seeking an education in copywriting, citing it as a key element of his and Bly’s success in their early careers.

“The fact that you’re here today show’s that you’re made out of the same stuff we were,” said Armstrong. “We realized we didn’t know everything. We were willing to learn. And we went to the place that — at that time — was offering the best instruction available. And we made a commitment. So I think that makes it a virtual certainty that there are many, many people in this room who will have an enjoyable, satisfying, and hopefully lucrative career as a freelance copywriter.”
