This type of fundraiser is a great way for customers to support a cause while doing their Christmas shopping online.

Christmas is the season of helping others. Balsam Hill, a leading online retailer of artificial pre lit Christmas trees, is participating by promoting a nation-wide Christmas fundraising program to benefit nonprofit organizations.
“Nonprofit organizations work hard and are often underfunded,” says Thomas Harman, founder and CEO of Balsam Hill. “They have to apply for grant money and ask for donations. Our aim was to create an initiative in which nonprofits wouldn’t have to expend much energy to raise funds.”
The company has succeeded. Churches, schools, and nonprofits with websites can place a link on their website. When their members click through the link and purchase Balsam Hill Christmas trees, Christmas wreaths, or other items on the site, Balsam Hill will donate 5% of the purchase price to the organization. The fundraiser, only open to approved nonprofits and schools, continues through December 31st.
A New York Times article states that Giving USA, a research foundation supported by the fundraising industry, recently reported the largest drop in giving over the last five decades. The 5.7 percent decrease largely affected educational institutions and organizations like food banks and homeless shelters. The latter came as a surprise to Giving USA, which expected to see an increase in donations to services that provide basic needs.
Nonprofits are helping to close the gap by partnering with retail companies like Balsam Hill. These partnerships allow the supporters of the nonprofit to easily give to the organization. “This type of fundraiser is a great way for customers to support a cause while doing their Christmas shopping online,” says Harman.
To help increase the amount of money a foundation can receive from Balsam Hill, there are no product or sale exclusions for the fundraiser. A church member can purchase a garland, and larger organizations can purchase commercial Christmas trees. “We encourage the approved nonprofits and schools to advertise the fundraiser as much as they can. Besides helping them to generate as many donations as possible, it’s a great community builder,” Harman says.
Balsam Hill is anticipating a large number of organizations to participate. Harman points out that customers will want to purchase product early in the season, as popular sale items such as white Christmas trees and full-size, pre lit Christmas trees tend to sell quickly.
