D&J Properties, a green consultancy group, is bringing together a panel of green building experts from a variety of disciplines to discuss green building practices and options in a Trust Talk, Thursday October 28 starting at 5:30 at the Balsam Mountain Boarding House. Additionally, D &J Properties will host an open house Saturday, October 30, between 2:00 - 6:00 pm at their Balsam Mountain Preserve residence and office.
New Energy Works Timberframers, and their sister company Pioneer Millworks, will be at the open house to discuss timber framing and the use of sustainable wood in home building and home finishing. This will be an opportunity for land and homeowners to create a dialogue with experts to develop a knowledge base about what green building is and how it could work in their homes.
D&J Properties has an approach to green residential construction that focuses on return on investment. “Building green might look price expensive on the front side, but from a value standpoint, it’s much more effective and less costly in the long run,” states David Walters, managing partner. The discussion in late October is sure to have some focus on cost, but David continues, “When you build green you always have a story. People, product and process give you a lot more to talk about, to feel good about.”
While building their timber frame home David, and his wife Jean, had the help of their own green team; New Energy Works Timberframers, Pioneer Millworks, Clark & Leatherwood and many more. Gathering members of that team for a larger group discussion is just one of the steps the Walters’ have planned to spread the word on the importance of planning and achieving a sustainable home. The Walters home has already earned the highest statewide accreditation point count of any NC HealthyBuilt Home Gold project and is one of the first homes in western North Carolina to achieve LEED-H Gold status.
