Cali Bamboo Donates $24K to 1% for the Planet
Cali Bamboo Donation Benefits San Diego Coastkeeper and Surfrider
Foundation
SAN DIEGO (Business Wire EON/PRWEB ) September 12, 2007 --
Cali Bamboo, the company
dedicated to saving the planet one customer at a time, today announced a
donation of $24K to “1%
for the Planet,” the organization working
with businesses committed to creating a healthier planet. The funds have
been designated to benefit two San Diego-based environmental
organizations and two groups focusing on protecting rainforests.
“We’re putting our
money where our mouth is when it comes to being a green company and
making a difference in helping the planet. We challenge other companies
to do the same,” said Cali Bamboo President,
Jeff Goldberg.
Goldberg said membership in 1% was part of the company’s
way to give back for its remarkable sales results since launching in
2004. Cali Bamboo’s sales quadrupled in 2006
and are on course to double in 2007.
1% for the Planet members donate at least 1% of their annual sales
revenue to environmental organizations worldwide. The organization
collected about $2.8 million in 2005, its first year. In 2006, donations
increased to more than $6 million and are projected to increase again in
2007.
Cali Bamboo’s green products include bamboo
fencing, flooring, plywood, thatch, rugs and wall and ceiling coverings.
Bamboo has regenerative properties and is incredibly strong. No wood on
earth grows faster than bamboo. It is a high-yield renewable resource
and the most environmentally sustainable wood on Earth. It can be
continuously re-harvested every three years without causing damage to
the plant system and surrounding environment.
In contrast, trees typically used for conventional wood fencing or
residential construction take 30 to 50 years to regenerate to their full
mass. Hardwood forests also produce less oxygen, consume less carbon
dioxide, and experience significant erosion following the harvest of
trees — all producing substantial long-term
negative environmental effects.
Cali Bamboo is a San Diego green company operated by two surfing buddies
who have been riding a giant wave of business success since launching
their company in 2004.
For founders Goldberg and Tanner Haigwood, a bamboo products company was
the perfect fit: an environmentally friendly concept that could not only
make them successful businessmen but also save the planet, “one
customer at a time,” as the company’s
tagline says.
Benefiting from Cali’s contributions through
1% for the Planet is:
-
$16,000 to be split between the Surfrider
Foundation and their San Diego chapter, a grassroots, non-profit,
environmental organization that works to protect our oceans, waves,
and beaches;
-
$5,000 to San Diego Coastkeeper,
which protects the region’s bays, beaches,
watersheds and ocean for the people and wildlife that depend on them.
They seek to balance community outreach, education, and advocacy to
promote stewardship of clean water and a healthy coastal ecosystem;
-
$1,000 to Rainforest Relief,
which seeks to protect rainforests from logging, mining and
agricultural businesses;
-
$1,000 to Amazon Watch,
which opposes large-scale business growth in the Amazon Basin; and
-
$1,000 directly to 1%
for the Planet.
