ApplianSys' Latest Web Cache Servers Improve Internet Access Across the Globe

Web caching appliances help ISPs and enterprises struggling with expensive internet access save bandwidth, reduce costs and improve their users' internet experience.

It has alleviated half of our http traffic!...The difference has been dramatic - it was an 'Oh my god' moment from day one…We used to offer speeds of between 500 and 800Kb/s but now we can offer 800Kb/s minimum and an average of 1.5-2Meg per second. Our customers are already noticing the difference.

ApplianSys today announced the release of its latest web cache servers, designed for organisations around the world still struggling with scarce, expensive internet access.

Whether in Lilongwe in Mali or rural California, many users across the economic divide are finding that the introduction of undersea fibre optic cables and satellite broadband services have not yet made enough bandwidth available or affordable. If anything, it has simply stimulated demand to move further ahead of supply.

Comments Gregory EID - MD of Teledata ICT in Ghana: "Like many countries across Africa, the poor quality and high cost of bandwidth is still an issue."

Jason Coleman of Esplanade, an ISP serving customers in Gualala, California, also has an issue with high costs but feels this is a moot point when he can't find any additional bandwidth to support subscribers: "We're stuck out here and don't have the options available in the city. There's no Qwest [high speed ISP in the USA] or other multiple backbone providers here creating competition,so options are limited."

CACHEbox from ApplianSys helps organisations save money on internet connections and improve the service for end users by downloading content once and sharing it from an ISP's network or an organisation's Local Area Network (LAN).

The next generation of CACHEbox appliances includes the CACHEbox220 and the CACHEbox230, the first web cache servers to use solid state drives (SSD) to deliver over 2,500 HTTP requests per second in the 1U format. The '230' also includes terabyte storage to take full advantage of ApplianSys' latest video caching extensions for storing and serving internet video.

Mike Clark, CEO of ApplianSys, observes: "The cache vendors of 10 years ago have either disappeared or turned into UTM suppliers, with web caching just one component of a multi-purpose device."

"That's fine in those markets where bandwidth is cheap and plentiful and the focus is now predominantly security. A large part of the world isn't there yet. They already have the right security technologies deployed in their network and don't need to buy them in another product. They do need to save bandwidth and save money. Products still focused on caching, updated to deal with today's content, are exactly what they are looking for. They have been coming to ApplianSys in droves from all corners of the globe, asking for a sensibly priced solution to this issue. We have simply listened and delivered what they are asking for."

Jason Coleman reflects on the impact buying CACHEbox is having on his business: "It has alleviated half of our http traffic!...The difference has been dramatic - it was an 'Oh my god' moment from day one…We used to offer speeds of between 500 and 800Kb/s but now we can offer 800Kb/s minimum and an average of 1.5-2Meg per second. Our customers are already noticing the difference."

Gregory EID agrees: "CACHEbox is helping us stand out in the market place and win more business… Quite simply, CACHEbox is the ideal solution for ISPs operating where internet bandwidth is in short supply or very expensive."
