BankCard Central has teamed up with Restaurantpartner.com to raise awareness of credit card fraud and identity theft within the restaurant industry and help protect restaurants from financial and reputational risk.

BankCard Central , an international merchant services and payment solutions provider, has announced a partnership with Restaurantpartner.com. The partnership is designed to bring awareness to the growing risk of credit card fraud and identity theft currently present in the restaurant industry. Their goal is to help protect restaurants from the financial and reputational dangers of this rapidly growing concern.

Restaurantpartner.com founder, Monty Lockyear, points to commonly unknown statistics as a motivator to form this partnership. “According to card association data, restaurants make up over 40% of all incidents where a criminal gained unauthorized access to credit card information. Other studies put that number as high as 62%. That is more than any other business segment, including internet merchants.”

The two companies plan to start with an awareness campaign geared to educate restaurant owners and managers. Topics that will be covered include hiring practices to screen out potential criminals, best practices for protecting cardholder data, choosing terminals and POS systems that don’t store cardholder data, updates on pending state legislation and complete interpretation of compliance regulations mandated by the card associations referred to as PCIDSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards).

“Most restaurateurs aren’t aware of the liability that comes with accepting credit cards. If they are ever compromised by an employee skimming cards or a hacker who infiltrates their POS system, they can face fines in excess of $100,000 and a very damaging public image,” said Lockyear. “By working with BankCard Central, we hope to provide information and resources that restaurants can easily understand and put into practice.”
