Las Vegas Bariatric Surgeon Discusses Latest FDA Requirements for Lap-Band Surgery

I think this is a tremendous opportunity for those severely obese individuals to also benefit from the outcomes of the LAP-BAND surgery in reduction of health problems and improvement in their quality of life.

In a decision that could impact 26 million Americans, the U. S. Food and Drug Administration recently lowered the Body Mass Index (BMI) requirements for the surgical weight loss procedure known as the LAP-BAND System®. Las Vegas weight loss surgeon Dr. Francis Teng says the FDA defines several ways a patient can now qualify for the LAP-BAND Adjustable Gastric Banding System, which can help them lose an average of 36% of their excess weight [1].

The LAP-BAND System® is a surgically implanted device designed to help a patient lose weight. The device is placed around the upper portion of the stomach to restrict the amount of food it can hold, thus helping the patient eat less. The system is designed for use in severely obese adults whom have been obese for more than 5 years, and for whom traditional nonsurgical methods of weight loss have proved unsuccessful. Patients must have a BMI of at least 40, a BMI of 35 with one or more comorbid conditions, or be at least 100 pounds overweight.

Dr. Teng says the new requirements present patients seeking weight loss surgery in Las Vegas, and throughout the U. S. with potentially exciting news as they strive to make a healthy transformation. “I think this is a tremendous opportunity for those severely obese individuals to also benefit from the outcomes of the LAP-BAND surgery in reduction of health problems and improvement in their quality of life. Millions of Americans can now benefit from this change in qualifications for lap band surgery. Finally, American standards are paralleling to the rest of the world in terms of global health care benefits from surgical weight loss through the lap band system.”
