The city of Barrie, in partnership with The Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL) and the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association (OWHA), announced the highly anticipated Clarkson Cup Finals presented by Scotiabank will be held at the Barrie Molson Center (BMC) from March 24th to 27th, 2011. Representatives of the CWHL, WWHL, the Right Honorable Adrienne Clarkson and Olympic Gold Medalists will attend the Clarkson Cup tournament with tickets on sale now on the CWHL website, http://www.cwhl.ca and the local girls associations.
“This is an exciting announcement and the City of Barrie is embracing the opportunity to host such a high caliber event at the Barrie Molson Centre. This tournament is anticipated to bring thousands of fans to the BMC over four days, with considerable spin-off in terms of hotel and restaurant business. Not to mention some of the country’s top athletes will be here to enjoy the tournament and all that our city has to offer,” says Mayor Jeff Lehman.
“The Vancouver Games offered an incredible opportunity to showcase the spectacular talent we have in Canada,” said CWHL Executive Director, Brenda Andress. “What most people don’t realize is that our female athletes work really hard to maintain a league that allows them to compete on an elite level. The Barrie Ontario hosted Clarkson Cup Finals offer a great opportunity to showcase these women in our communities, as well as provide an incredible venue to watch the stars of the CWHL, including many former and current Olympians, playing the game they love.”
The Clarkson Cup Finals bring together the premiere women hockey players in North America, for a complete four days of elite hockey and interactive events presented by Scotiabank.
“As Canada’s Hockey Bank, we are proud to support the CWHL and the Clarkson Cup Championship as events like this make positive contributions to women’s hockey in communities across Canada,” said Duncan Hannay, Scotiabank Senior Vice-President, Canadian Marketing. “We believe that women hockey players are great role models and will help a new generation of girls and young women reach their goals on and off the ice.”
The Clarkson Cup was awarded to the CWHL Montreal Stars for the first time in 2009 by the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson. Like the Stanley Cup™, it was commissioned by and named for a Governor General of Canada and is the premiere sports trophy in women’s hockey.

About Barrie – Barrie is an exciting, caring and progressive community that 135,000 people call home. Situated 90 km north of the Greater Toronto Area on beautiful Kempenfelt Bay, Barrie offers an excellent life style and multitude of recreational opportunities. We are committed to the growth of prosperity of Central Ontario’s leading city and most dynamic waterfront community.
Comprised of many former and upcoming Olympic athletes, the CWHL was established in 2007 by the players themselves. The CWHL is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to raising the profile of women’s hockey in Canada while providing a place where the best female hockey players can train and compete. By day, these women are moms, have successful careers, and graduate from top tier universities. By night, they’re Canada’s finest female hockey players – unpaid, underestimated, and ultimately unknown. Several players in the league have played with the Canadian and US Olympic teams that house Canada's
next generation of Olympians striving to play hockey at the highest level. In 2007, the CWHL partnered with the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association (OWHA) and Scotiabank, the Official Bank of the NHL, NHLPA, NHL Alumni and CWHL. These partnerships have been key in the development of the league.
