The first snowfall of the season is picturesque, but the novelty begins to wear off after snow becomes inconvenient and creates damage to a home. Winter weather increases the vulnerability to a homeowner’s roof. Preparing a roof before inclement weather hits will assure the family stays dry and warm through the harsh cold winter.
Dustin Bassi, owner of A&D Exteriors shares some preventative steps homeowners should take to prepare their roofs for winter weather.
The fall brings crisp weather and falling leaves. Unfortunately, falling leaves and branches clog up gutters which can lead to problems. Clogged gutters and debris left on the roof create problems when the winter weather comes. Snow has no place to melt and drain off if the gutters are not working properly and water will take the path of least resistance, usually under shingles into the underlayment and flashing and possibly into the attic.
Having solid supports in the attic will prevent the weight of accumulated snow from causing a collapse. “If a homeowner hears cracking and creaking or identifies sagging in their attic, a professional should be called right away,” said Dustin.
An ice dam is a common occurrence that happens in the winter. A ridge of ice forms at the edge of a roof and prevents melting snow from draining off the roof. Water then backs up into the roof covering and travels into the insulation, attic, ceiling and walls causing damage.
A well- insulated attic and well- ventilated roof will prevent heat from escaping which protects the roof from ice dams. Natural air flowing from attic vents keep the attic cool, reducing the potential for ice dams to form on the roof. Proper insulation keeps the attic cold by blocking out the heat from the home which can save homeowners on their utility bills. “It is important to maintain air flow in the attic, homeowners should never cover up their attic vents with insulation,” warns Dustin.
Scheduling a maintenance check with A&D Exteriors is a preventative measure homeowners can take in order to sustain peace of mind throughout the winter. Maintenance will include a visual check as well as an inspection on flashing, to make sure it is properly sealed, the attic, checking for leaks and proper insulation and free flowing gutters and downspouts. They will also check exposed fasteners on gutters to make sure they are clear and have no potential to cause an overflow.
